, the political power, i think as senator john mccain said, it is elections, elections, elections, that john boehner will see, as well, there is a need to pass immigration reform. we didn't get into the logistics of what the house strategy would be. >> ryan grim is the momentum building with cantor's flip-flop, does that create more momentum? >> sure, i mean, it certainly moves one end of the debate. republicans now more or less have to be for the dream act or they're considered not part of it, anywhere near the reasonable conversation, but you know, look, if they want to put the dream act up alone and push is forward i imagine that democrats would say okay, fine. we'll do the dream act if that is all we can get. but you know, republicans are fooling themselves if they think that the dream act is going to be enough to get comprehensive immigration reform. you know, democrats are going to want legalization for everybody who is here who has not committed a crime, et cetera, et cetera, in order to give the republicans what they want in the comprehensive bill. so just the dream act is not going

that did not harm but would gather information. this administration ran against john mccain saying, even though john mccain agreed, yeah, we don't want to water board, we don't want to do anything that somebody might someday call torture, they complained, gee, this is allowing radicals to be recruited against the united states because of the unjust nature of doing a procedure that's not harmful to someone's health, to gather information to save american lives, which it did. here we are now with this administration that thought waterboarding helped jeeyaddists -- jihadists recruit more radicals using a process of having a high administration official think to himself or herself, i don't think this may be enough. blow them up. without giving adequate consideration to civilians who will be killed, to family members who will be upset, to the ability of our enemies to use that to recruit other radicals, many times over, to replace those that have been killed with a drone strike. this administration's systemic failure to understand what the muslim brotherhood calls, quote, civilization jihad,

in the middle of his term. remember, he tried, as did a lot of democrats and john mccain to get immigration reform through in 2007. and that's when the backlash grew. and then when the bush administration was deemed a failure, which many of us believed broadly that it was, a lot of conservatives said that's true. and instead of trying to moderate the party then, they said the problem was this compassionate conservative guy was too liberal. so they pulled the party way over to the right. the problem they have now is the tea party folks are the folks who kind of got them there in 2010. and it's as if the republicans are saying well, we needed your votes to drive this car to the country club, but we really don't want to let you inside the country club. so they're courting a kind of class warfare in the republican party over the next couple of years. >> e.j., one of the things i think you have written about more eloquently than anybody else is the idea of -- you've written ambitiously i should say about the idea of civility, that we can have reasonable disagreements about even very profound dif

some of the things that john mccain has been pushing hard. doesn't the united states have to do more? >> i think the answer is yes. i mean, it's clear that there are risks in acting, but i think we have to take a look at what are the risks and costs of not acting. and i think we have to keep in mind the kind of red lines that the president has established in the use of chemical weapons or the israelis have established in terms of -- >> just look at what they've acknowledged in munich that they were involved in that strike which everyone sort of knew, but interesting that he would say so. >> and what it highlights is things are going to happen. you'd rather put us in a position that rather than being driven to do something, we're in a position to try to effect the landscape more and we don't wait to be in a position where we have to react, but we're in a position where we try to influence more what the shape of the landscape is going to be. >> finally, as we look forward to john when in anbrennan's con hearing, how much blow back is in the united states because of the drone attacks an
